Her Story

The Cheyenne call it "The Fight Where the Girl Saved Her Brother." American history calls it the Battle of the Rosebud, and left her out.

In June 1876, Buffalo Calf Road Woman (also known as Mo-chi, or Brave Woman), a Northern Cheyenne warrior, saw her brother, Chief Comes in Sight, thrown from his horse and surrounded. She rode straight into the fight, pulled him onto her horse, and carried him out alive. Her people named the battle for her.

A week later, she fought at the Little Bighorn. Cheyenne oral tradition holds that she struck the blow that knocked Custer from his horse. For over a century, her story was carried by her own people, because they knew the history books wouldn't.
