Her Story

History gave Grace O'Malley one word: pirate. She deserves three: warrior, rebel, mother.

As a girl on Ireland's wild Atlantic coast, she was told she couldn't sail because her long hair would catch in the rigging. So the story goes, she cut it off, earning the name Gráinne Mhaol, "bald Grace." She grew up to command ships and hundreds of men, leading them from the front.

When an English governor seized her lands and killed her son, she sailed to London to see Queen Elizabeth I herself. Legend says she refused to bow, since she considered herself a queen too. She left with what she came for.

And the mother? Legend has it that the day after giving birth to her son at sea, she heard her crew losing a fight with pirates, climbed on deck, and turned the tide.
