Her Story

Around 480 BCE, Queen Artemisia I ruled Caria, on the coast of what is now Turkey. When the Persian king Xerxes assembled his fleet to invade Greece, she was the only woman among his naval commanders.

Before the Battle of Salamis, she warned him the narrow straits would trap his ships. He didn't listen. She was right. When the battle turned to chaos, her quick thinking got her ship out. As the historian Herodotus tells it, Xerxes watched from the hillside and said, "My men have become women, and my women men."

The Greeks put a bounty of 10,000 drachmas on her head. They never caught her.
