Her Story

Tomoe Gozen is the only woman warrior described in detail in Japan's ancient samurai chronicles. She lived in the 12th century during the Genpei War, an archer and swordswoman the chronicles called a warrior worth a thousand. She became her lord's first captain, the highest battlefield rank, not because of her family, but because no one was better.

Her story begins with her mother. When the infant Yoshinaka was being hunted by his father's killers, Tomoe's mother took him in, nursed him, and raised him alongside her own children. Tomoe grew up to ride beside him into battle. History remembered the daughter and forgot the mother. We don't even know her name.
