Her Story

Lozen was a Chihenne Chiricahua Apache warrior, healer and prophet from the land that is now New Mexico, where I live. Most history books don't mention her at all.

Her people believed she could sense the direction of an approaching enemy, and they relied on her gift completely. When women and children froze at the edge of the flooded Rio Grande, Lozen rode in first and led them across. Late in her brother's campaign, she escorted a new mother and her newborn across the Chihuahuan Desert to safety.

Her brother, Chief Victorio, said: "Lozen is my right hand… a shield to her people." After his death, she rode with Geronimo until the very end.

Her story survives because her own people kept it alive.
